Angels appear in the Bible from the beginning to the end from the book of Genesis to the book of Revelation.  In fact angels are mentioned 294 times in the Bible.

  • Angels announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds (Luke 2:14)
  • Angels ministered to Jesus after his temptation in the desert (Matthew 4:11)
  • Angels comforted Jesus in his agony in the garden (Luke 22:43)
  • Angels proclaimed Jesus’ resurrection from the dead (John20:12)
  • Jesus stated that angels of little ones continually behold the face of the Father (Matthew 18:10)
  • Angels will come with Christ on the Day of Judgment (Matthew 24:31)
  • Angels will separate the wicked from the just on the last day (Matthew 13:49)
  • God sent an angel to free Apostle Peter after he was jailed by King Herod (Acts 12:7-11)
  • An angel of God appeared to Paul and told him that even though he and others were ship-wreaked on the island of Malta, he was not to fear and that God has granted him the lives of all upon the ship (Acts 27)

Now, let us look at specific references in the Bible.

Genesis 28:10-12

Jacob’s Ladder

“And Jacob went out of Beersheba, and went to Haran.  And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set. And he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep and dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.”

Exodus 23:20-22

God send an angel to lead Moses

“Behold, I send an angel before you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place which I have prepared.

Give heed to him and hearken to his voice, do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, for my name is in him.  But if you hearken attentively to his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.”

Book of Tobias 12:15

The angel Raphael

“I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven who stand before the Lord”

Book of Psalms 34:7

The angel of the Lord, who encamps with them, delivers all who fear God’

Book of Psalm 91:11-12

“For God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways.  With their hands they shall support you lest you strike your foot against a stone”

Daniel 6:19-22

Daniel in the lion’s den

“Then at break of day, the king arose and went in haste to the den of lions.  When he came near the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish and said to Daniel, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually been able to deliver you from the lions?”

Then Daniel said to the King,

“O King, live forever:  My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not hurt me, because I was found blameless before him, and also before you, O King,   I have done no wrong”

Matthew 1:8-21

An angel appears to Joseph

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.  When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to send her away.  But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Luke 1:26-28

The angel Gabriel appears to Mary

“In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.”  And coming to her, he said, “Hail Mary, Full of Grace! The Lord is with you.”

Luke 2:8-14

An angel appears to the Shepherds

And in that region, there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their flock by night.  And an angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said to them, “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  And this will be a sign for you; you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.”  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on the earth peace among men with whom he is pleased.”

John 20:11-15

The Resurrection of Jesus

“But Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been.  And they said to her “Woman, why are you weeping?’  She said to them, “They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.”

When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus.  Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

Acts 12:6-10

The Angel rescues Peter from jail

“The very night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guiding the prison; and behold, an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals”.  And he did so.  And he said to him, “Wrap your mantle around you and follow me.”   And he went out and followed him; he did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.  When they had passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate leading to the city.  It opened to them of its accord, and they went out and passed on through one street; and immediately the angel left him.

Hebrews 13:1-2

Letter of St. Paul to the Hebrews

“Let brotherly love continue.  Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

Revelations 8:1-2

“When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.  Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.”

Revelations 12:7-9

“Then war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon.  The dragon and his angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.  The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who was called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it.”

Notwithstanding the overwhelming evidence of the presence and activities of angels in the Bible, the Vatican and some church elders have denounced and even rejected the existence of angels.

The rejection of angels by church hierarchies goes back at least as far as the council of Laodicea, AD 363-354.  Canon 35 of this council pronounced a curse (anathema) on those who invoked the assistance of angels; this is the way it was put;

“Christians must not forsake the Church of God, and go away and invoke angels and gather assemblies, which things are forbidden. If, therefore, any one shall be found engaged in this covert idolatry, let him be anathema; for he has forsaken our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and has gone over to idolatry.”

At the Council of Rome in AD 745, Pope Zachary prohibited the use of the name of any angel other than Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.

Thankfully, angels have become popular in and out of the church in recent decades and this is a trend that some Christian leaders have embraced. (For example, Billy Graham has written a best-selling book on angels).  However, other Christians leaders continue to preach against contact with angels on the grounds that praying to anyone other than God the Father or Jesus is a form of idolatry.

The truth of the matter is that the spiritual realm is full of angels just waiting to enter the earth in answer to our heartfelt prayers and calls.  Angels herald important events, rescue souls and bring initiations.  They serve in every arena of life and they want to be more involved in the affairs of all.  They are eager to help, enlighten, comfort, inspire, heal and warn us of danger.  They are the most reliable friends anyone can have.

Here are a few of the examples of the many ways in which angels ministered to prominent Biblical figures;

  • An angel stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son Isaac
  • Jacob wrestled with an angel and would not let go until the angel agreed to bless him
  • An angel helped Moses lead the people of Israel to the Promised Land
  • An angel protected Daniel in the lion’s den
  • An angel charged the water at Bethesda with the healing light of his aura
  • Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would give birth to Jesus and told her cousin Elizabeth that she was to give birth to John the Baptist
  • An angel warned Joseph in a vision to flee to Egypt with Jesus and Mary
  • An angel proclaimed Jesus’ resurrection.

In truth, there are myriad angels serving in just about every capacity imaginable.  There are angels of victory, Christmas angels, angels of Eucharist, wedding angels and angels that accompany every ascended master.   There are angels who can help us find parking spaces, pass tests, mend relationships, clean up  oil spills and stop wars.  Some types of angels attend every birth, others attend every death and still others record all of the events in every person’s life.  Angels see to the care and health of the body, and they oversee the conception and gestation of babies.  A multitude of angels are available to assist us with almost every aspect of existence.

With all of these angels moving in time and space, it is our advantage to learn more about them and how to work with them.

So,

  • Who are angels?
  • Why were they created?
  • What is their nature?
  • How do they work?

Getting answers to these questions can help clarify our relationship with the members of this kingdom.

Who is an angel?

The word angel is derived from the Greek word angelos and the Latin word angelus both meaning “messenger.”   Angels are messengers of light whom God created to minister to souls on earth as their guides, guardians and friends.

Since God created angels out of his own fiery being, they are extensions of his living presence and personify his grace, majesty and power.  God created the angels to serve and minister to us.  Answering our prayers is their reason for being.  Although we live in the material world, we have a special link to God through his angels.    We each have a part of God, a divine spark within us that allows us to ask angels for help and to expect results.

As long as what you are asking them to do is positive and will not hurt others or interfere with your life plan, the angels will answer your call.  Not only can you ask them to help you personally but you can also direct them – even command them – to perform larger tasks like stopping crime and saving children from violence and drugs.

The angels are literally waiting for you to give them assignments. For there is one rule they seldom break.  They don’t intervene in our world unless we ask them to.

Why were they created?

God created angels before he created us because he knew we would need heavenly caretakers.  When someone prays to God during difficult times, whether he knows about angels or not, his prayers are answered by the angelic hosts, who rush instantaneously to his side.  The angels give tremendous power and protection to God’s children by providing them direct access to the Creator.

Angels embody the frequencies of the divine mind and make vibrations of the Father-Mother God readily accessible to those dwelling in the physical plane.  They serve as step-down transformers to transmit spiritual light, energy and consciousness to people in quantities that they can assimilate.  As a sunbeam carries the light of the sun from the central source, so angels carry the light of God throughout creation.

Because of the law of freewill, however, angels cannot intervene in our world unless we ask them to.  With great love, the angels are literally waiting to be called into action on behalf to all souls of light.  It gives them great joy to help.  In fact it is their reason for being.

Fallen Angels

(Rev. 12:7-9  … war in heaven)

Besides the angels who chose to serve more fully by embodying on earth, there are other angels who live in human bodies or exist in astral plane who have set themselves to a different purpose.  These are angels who fell from God’s kingdom long ago through pride and lust and now move among us with intentions that are evil as opposed to good.  In their rebellion against the light of God, these fallen angels try to thwart the activities of God and his sons and daughters.  The fallen angels have been characterized as having the following qualities – rebellion, pride, sinfulness and evilness.  As deniers of God, they have effectively extinguished the flame of spirit within themselves.  They are proud and heartless having no light in their eyes and no real love of anyone.  Instead, they seek to manipulate others to do their bidding.

The seven Archangels

The angelic hosts can be of immeasurable assistance in daily life and on the spiritual path.  Among the most powerful of these protectors, guides and teachers are the seven archangels.  The archangels are the captains of all angelic hosts, having been created as the foremost divine attributes and are at the service of the sons and daughters of God. They work tirelessly to defeat evil and promote good.

The Ascended Masters teach that there are seven divine flames that reflect the seven rays, with an archangel serving on each of the rays.  The archangels also have  twin flames,  just as the sons and daughters of God do.  So serving with the archangels are their feminine complements, the archeiai.  The singular noun is archiea and the plural is archeiai.  The terms archangel and archeia share the Greek root word arch, which means, “to lead” or “to rule.”  Together the archangels and their archeiai focus on the masculine and feminine, or alpha and omega, polarities of their particular ray of service.  Calling to one always invokes the presence of the other.

Learning about the archangels and archeiai of the seven rays and their specialties – and consciously befriending them – can also help relate to them more intimately and effectively.

How they work

The Masters describe archangels as divine architects.  God uses them to draft the plans for his projects and to execute them.  They are cosmic builders and designers in the grandest sense of the word.  They are to our minds the divine blueprint for every endeavour, from the smallest to the greatest.

All of the archangels are also healers who come as master surgeons to mend our souls and four lower bodies.  When they are in our midst, they minister to us and purify us by transmitting the great increment of light that they have garnered.  ****Properly using this boost the energy from the angels can help us make much greater progress on the spiritual path.***

A TEN-STEP PLAN ON HOW TO WORK WITH ANGELS

  1. Make room in your life for angels

The angels live in the world of Spirit, the heaven-world and we live in the world of matter.  Angels naturally gravitate toward their home.  So if you want the angels to feel comfortable with you, you need to make your world- your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings – more like theirs.

The angels are comfortable with thoughts of peace and love, not with irritation and aggression.  You may not be able to put out of your mind the rude driver who cut in front of you on your way home.  But you can free yourself from the irritation, starting by communing with the angels for just a few minutes a day.

First, separate yourself from distraction. Turn off the radio and TV, go into a room by yourself or to your favorite nature spot, imagine an angel in your mind and commune with the angels.

Simply talk to the angels about your problems.  Talk as if you were talking to your best friend.  And then listen.  Be silent and wait for the thoughts that the angels will put into your mind.  Before long, your relationship with the angels will turn into an upward spiral: the angels will help you to feel more positive.  And feeling positive will bring you closer to the angels.

  1. Pray aloud/Decree Isa. 45:11

The angels have answered many unspoken prayer or intense wish of the heart.  You don’t have to speak in order to get their attention, especially if you are in a place where it would be awkward, like a business meeting or on the subway.  But you will get a more powerful response when you speak to them loud.

There is power in your voice: the power to create or to destroy.  God used this power when he said, “Let there be light.”  By using your gift of speech, you can create changes in your life.

Spoken prayer comes in different forms; songs and hymns, which have traditionally been used to summon the angels; structural prayer, like the “Our Father”; and unstructured prayer, in which you speak the deepest longings of your soul.  You can combine all of these with “decrees” and “fiats.”

  1. Use the name of God

God is inside of you.  And when you use the energy of God that is in you to direct the angels, they can answer you with all of the power of the universe.

When God spoke to Moses out of the burning bush, he revealed both his name – I AM THAT I AM – and the true nature of man. You are the bush and the fire is your divine spark, God’s fire that he gives to you as his son or daughter.  It is the power to create in God’s name – and to command the angels.

Jesus used God’s name when he said “I AM the resurrection and the life.”  Every time you say “I AM…” you are really saying  “God in me is…” and thus drawing to yourself whatever follows.  When you say “I AM illumination,” you are saying the God in you is attracting to you more of the quality of illumination that you already possess.

  1. Give your prayers and decrees daily

The angels are always there. But we do not always know how to reach them.  The best way to make sure that the angels answer when you call them is to create a well-travelled pathway from your heart to theirs by communing with them every day.  And the best way to commune with them is to schedule a daily session of prayers and devotions.  It doesn’t have to be long – five minutes is a great start.

When you pray daily, you not only help yourself, but you also help people you don’t even know.  The angels are looking for people who regularly invoke God’s light to be their partners in planetary healing.  When they find these partners, they direct their light through them to help those in danger from disease, violent crime or natural disaster.  Thus your daily prayers can truly make a world of difference.

  1. Ask for help

Even after you have established your relationship with the angels, you still need to remember to ask for help at the time you need it.  The angels respect your free will.  On rare occasions, they will intercede without your speaking up.  But most often, they politely wait to be called.

  1. Repeat decrees and prayers

Prayers and decrees are more powerful when you repeat them.  Many protestants avoid saying prayers more than once, seeing it as the vain repetition that Jesus advised against (Matthew 6:7).  “After all,” they say “why should I have to ask God for something more than one time?”  However, the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches practice repetition of Our Father, Hail Mary and other prayers.  Jewish mystic repeated the names of God.  For some mystics, repetition truly becomes prayer “without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

The reason it is more effective to repeat a prayer is that each time you say it, you are giving more light-energy to God and the angels.  The angels can use that energy as a seed, adding more light-energy as they go about answering your request.  So choose a group of prayers and decrees.  Then give them every day until the angels respond

  1. Send your prayers to the right address

If you want your pipes fixed, you call a plumber.  If you want to be rescued from a mugger, you call to the angels of protection.  If you want a relationship fixed, you call to the angels of love.

Angels have different jobs.  And they use energies of different frequencies (corresponding to different colours) to accomplish those jobs.

You can become more closely connected with the angels when you call to the archangels whose angels specialize in handling what you want done.

  1. Be specific

Angels answer your calls with precision, and they take pride in doing so.  The more specific the request, the more specific the answer will be.  As long as you are living your life in harmony with the universal source and devoting your energy to helping others, the angelic hosts will help you with the smallest details of your life.

Dinette was looking for a used Toyota 4Runner but knew that she couldn’t afford the steep prices they were selling for.  So she decided to leave it to the angels.  She wrote down the year, make, colour, engine size, price range, mileage and type of rims and tires she wanted.  She also listed that she wanted a mechanically sound car with power steering, power brakes, power windows, power locks, air-conditioning and cruise control.  She cut out a picture of the kind of truck she was looking for and carried it around in her wallet.  Every day, she gave decrees and fiats to the angels for fifteen to forty-five minutes while looking at her list and picture.

After weeks of scanning the classified, Danette was a little concerned but didn’t give up. “I knew the angels were working on it……….I wouldn’t settle for less,” she said.  Finally, she decided to continue her search in another city, twelve hours away.  Her friend there had told her that a 4Runner in her price range just wasn’t to be found.

But when she looked at the paper, there it was – A 1990 Toyota 4Runner for $3,000 less than any other I had seen,” she said.  The owner had just placed the ad. that day and the car fit every one of her specifications, right down to the cruise control.  Her bank approved the loan and she drove home in her new 4Runner – thanking the angels all the way.

The more detailed your request, the more satisfied you will be with the results.

  1. Visualize what you want to happen

You can increase the power of your prayer by maintain a strong mental picture of what you want to happen.  In addition, visualize brilliant light surrounding the problem or situation.  Sometimes concentrating on a picture as Danette did, can help too.  Here is another example of how visualization works.

A group of students were driving home after attending a spiritual seminar when their car began to overheat.  Since none of them had any extra money to spend on car repairs, they decided to ask the angels for help.  “Each time the needle started creeping hotter and hotter, I would make fiery calls to the angels,” said Kevin, the driver.  “I told the people in the car to hold visualization of snow, of crystal clear, cold mountain streams and ice all around the whole engine.  Then we would watch the needle immediately go right back down as the temperature dropped normal.”  The group made it home safely, thanks to the angels – and an effective visualization technique.  Of course, it is better to combine angelic assistance with professional help possible.

  1. Expect to be surprised

The question occurs to just about anyone who has ever thought about angels.  Why do the angels answer some prayers and not others?

Why does one person pray for ten years without getting what he wants while another gets it immediately?  Why are some houses destroyed by fire or flood while others are left untouched?  Surely the angels hear everyone’s prayers.

One reason is that the angels’ ability to respond to our prayers is based upon the cumulative effects of our past actions – our good and bad deeds from this and previous lifetimes, also known as karma.  The angels are neither genies nor Santa Claus.  They must play by the rules of karma.  When we pray and give devotion to the angels, they can sometimes eliminate the effects of karma, but often they can only reduce them.

 The angels hear all of your prayers.  But in order for your requests to be granted, they must fulfill three conditions;

  1. They should not interfere with God’s plan for your soul (or with your karma);
  2. They should not be harmful to you or anyone else;
  3. The timing must be right.

You could pray for years to win the lottery and not win.  But you might get something you didn’t expect, like a higher paying job that leads you in new directions. Perhaps the angels couldn’t answer your prayer to win the lottery because your soul needs to learn the lesson of earning a living.  But they did not answer in the way that was best for you.

If you follow the above ten steps and still find that you don’t get an answer, the angels may be trying to tell you something. It might be time to revise your prayer and try again.  Keep praying, and know that the angels will give you the best answer that they can based on your soul’s need.
